Facility Information
HVAF of Indiana, Inc. has served homeless veterans in the greater Metropolitan area of Indianapolis, Indiana, Marion County since 1993. Since its inception, HVAF has been dedicated to eliminating homelessness for veterans and their families through prevention, education, supportive services and advocacy. This is accomplished by providing supportive, structured housing to Indiana’s veterans and their families who are recovering from homelessness. In the Mayor’s Blueprint to End Homelessness, HVAF is identified as the principal coordinator of homeless veterans’ issues.
In June 1996, HVAF gained its 501(c)3 status and completed its first housing project, establishing a house for five veterans. This project became the first transitional housing unit for veterans in Indianapolis. Today, HVAF operates 14 scattered site supportive housing units with 78 beds; one apartment complex with 13 beds; a second apartment complex with 40 beds; and an in-house, intensive 2 year program, the Residential, Employment and Substance Abuse Treatment Program (REST) with 22 beds. HVAF will be opening a 50 bed apartment complex by September of 2011. On any given night we house 145 male and female homeless veterans who reside in our homes for up to two years. HVAF also operates the Special Needs/Vet to Vet program in collaboration with the Indianapolis VA Medical Center. This program provides intensive case management to 24 veterans who experience chronic mental illness along with chronic homelessness and they are enrolled in the program directly from the inpatient psychiatric unit at the VA Medical Center.
HVAF also operates the Veterans Services Center. This Center assists homeless and near homeless veterans and their families to address the direct causes relating to their homeless situations including food, shelter, clothing, furniture, personal hygiene items, case management services, veterans benefits counseling and free legal aid. Every one of our 145 veterans receives case management services from a Masters Level Social Worker with the ultimate goal being permanent housing, improved financial stability, greater self-determination and a positive reintegration with their community.
"HVAF has an amazing staff with a strong commitment to the veterans community and we're eager work with them to bring Back on My Feet to their members" said BOMF VP of Programming Wylie Belasik
